There are numerous factors that comprise the Montessori method, but the most important is a mutual respect between the guide (teacher) and children. Another important goal is to maintain a well balanced mixed-age group.  Attractive, child-sized materials are also essential to a Montessori classroom. 

All Montessori classrooms are based upon the principle of free choice and uninterrupted work time.  All the materials provided to the children are designed to promote self-directed learning after an initial demonstration.
